Key terms for Transmitting Data

Bandwidth
The maximum amount of data a connection can carry per second.
Lossy compression
Reduces file size by permanently discarding data that people are unlikely to notice.
NFC
Very short-range wireless communication (a few centimetres) used for contactless payments.
Packet switching
Splitting data into packets that may travel by different routes and are reassembled at the destination.
Ring topology
Each device connects to two others, forming a loop that data travels around.
Twisted pair cable
Copper cable with wires wound around each other to reduce interference; cheap and common in LANs.
WAN
A network covering a large geographical area, often using leased or third-party lines.
Wireless access point
Allows Wi-Fi devices to connect to a wired network.
